Mason’s Advanced Studies in Teaching and Learning (ASTL) K–12 science concentration provides advanced professional development for practicing elementary, middle, or high school science teachers.
Our program develops teacher-leaders who practice critical reflection through inquiry and problem-posing. Building content expertise further prepares teachers to become science education leaders.

Concentration Courses (12 credits)
- EDCI 663: Research in Science Teaching (3 credits)
- EDCI 670: Advanced Methods in Science Teaching (3 credits)
- EDCI 671: Innovations in Science Teaching (3 credits)
- EDUC 547: Scientific Inquiry and the Nature of Science (3 credits)
Elective Courses (6 credits)
Up to 6 credits in graduate science course work may be applied to the ASTL Science K-12 concentration with advisor approval..

Program Exit Requirement
Professional Development Portfolio: A performance-based assessment that provides concrete evidence of teacher professional development throughout the ASTL program. Students finalize and present their portfolios in their final spring semester.
