Foreign Language Foreign Language Education (PK-12 Licensure) – Bachelor's/Accelerated MEd Concentration

This Bachelor’s/Accelerated Master’s (BAM) is designed for academically strong undergraduates (minimum cumulative 3.0 GPA) currently enrolled at George Mason University with an interest in pursuing an MEd in Curriculum and Instruction with a Concentration in Foreign Language Foreign Language Education (PK-12 Licensure) within an accelerated time frame.

Beginning in Fall 2021, students may apply for the Bachelor’s/Accelerated Master’s program during the first semester junior year (the semester in which they will have earned at least 60 semester hours) and once any prerequisites have been met. Students must have a minimum of 75 credit hours to begin the BAM.

Beginning in Fall 2021, accepted BAM undergraduate students may take a maximum of 18 credits of graduate coursework with 12 credits/18 credits counting toward both undergraduate and graduate degrees.

MEd Program and Licensure Requirements

In addition to standard requirements, students interested in a Foreign Language Foreign Language Education (PK-12 Licensure) Bachelor’s Accelerated MEd Concentration must fulfill the following requirements:

  • An official CEHD Content Area (Endorsement) Review must be completed and reflect the following:
    Option 1: 30 credits of study in the target language at the 300 and 400 level
    Option 2: ACTFL WPT and OPI with a rating of at least Advanced Low plus six credits of study in the target language at the 300 and 400 level
    Note: Latin licensure candidates must choose Option 1
  • If accepted and having completed at least 120 credits and all requirements for a BA in any degree, students are awarded a bachelor’s degree and admitted to the MEd in Curriculum and Instruction with a Concentration in Foreign Language Education (PK-12 Licensure) – specific to the following languages: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Latin, or Spanish.
  • NOTE: Accelerated master’s students must also fulfill all requirements to qualify for internship. These requirements can vary depending on the Foreign Language licensure students are seeking and can include Praxis Subject Assessment and/or ACTFL Writing and Oral proficiency ratings of Advanced Low. Therefore, students must be in close contact with their graduate program advisor. Students must complete these Foreign-Language specific requirements AND submit required official passing Praxis Core Math (or SAT/ACT as sub) and Virginia Communication and Literacy Assessment (VCLA) scores prior to internship.

NOTE: Beginning the BAM after spring semester junior year and/or not taking the recommended courses each semester will result in extended time for completion as all courses may not be offered each semester.

George Mason University will verify completion of the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) state-approved preparation program at the graduate or undergraduate level. Such verification does not guarantee the issuance of a Virginia Collegiate Professional, Postgraduate Professional, or Pupil Personnel license from the Commonwealth of Virginia. It is solely the student's responsibility to comply with all requirements for licensure by the Commonwealth. Under Virginia law, a social security number is required for licensure.
