PHED students with catalog year 2012-2013 and beyond must earn at least 10 professional development points to achieve BSED status and 20 additional points to apply for student teaching. Professional development points may be earned by attending or volunteering at various events and activities. The goal is to provide future teachers with valuable experiences as they develop professionally. Please complete a Professional Development Plan Form to receive credit.

Events/activities that meet the requirements:

  • Become a member of VAHPERD (5 points)
    Register as a member of your state association, Virginia Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. Join as a full time student. Cost $15.00 www.vahperd.org
  • Become a member of SHAPE America (formerly AAHPERD) (10 points)
    Register as a member of your national association, American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. Join as a student. Cost: $50.00 www.shapeamerica.org
  • Attend a meeting of the PETE Society (5 points)
    The PETE Society is a University Life organization for PHED majors
  • Attend a meeting at your assigned school (5 points)
    Attend a meeting with your cooperating PE teacher at your assigned school for a minimum of one hour.
  • Attend a pre-approved event (5 points)
    You may have an event or activity that you would like to use as part of your professional development points. You must participate or volunteer for the activity for a minimum of one hour and you must have the event pre-approved before you attend the event. You will NOT receive credit if it is not pre-approved.
  • Participate or volunteer for a pre-approved event /activity (10 points)
    Participate or volunteer in an event/ activity for a minimum of 3 hours. The event/activity must pre-approved by a PHED faculty member or you will not receive credit.
  • Attend VAHPERD convention (10 points)
    Register and attend the VAHPERD Convention in the fall semester. Participate in 3 sessions for a minimum of 3 hours.
  • Presented at a VAHPERD convention (10 points))
    Participate in a presentation by the Mason students at a VAHPERD convention
  • Attend a PHED professional development session (10 points)
    Attend a professional development session hosted by the PETE Society or PHED faculty.
  • Volunteer at Mason's Health Expo (5 points)
    Volunteer a minimum of one hour at the Prince William Health Expo held in the spring semester.
  • Volunteer for school event (10 points)
    Volunteer a local school event for a minimum of 3 hours. This event may include Jump Rope for Heart, Hoops for Heart, Special Olympics, Fun Run, or Field Day.
