To earn a teaching license, students in the Elementary Education program must pass all coursework, pass the required state licensure exams and complete the state-required online training modules.

Licensure Exams

The following exams must be passed prior to beginning the internship:

  • Praxis Subject Assessment for Elementary Education
  • Virginia Communication and Literacy Assessment (VCLA)
  • Reading for Virginia Educators (RVE)

Content Area Coursework

Content Area Coursework (formerly called Endorsements) must be passed with a C or better. Complete information about these requirements and the review process is available on the Content Area Review website.

Major Coursework

All major coursework for undergrads must be passed with a C or better; graduate students must earn a B or better in their licensure classes.

Additional Requirements

Prior to licensure, students must complete an in-person First Aid/CPR/AED training and a few online modules offered through the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE). Detailed information will be shared with students upon admission to the major (undergrad) or admission to the MEd program.
