Music Education

Only courses taken for a letter grade are acceptable, not courses taken as Pass-Fail.
*If you hold a current, VDOE-issued Provisional License and are interested in completing a State-approved program, complete the form below. If you only need to satisfy specific VDOE-cited course deficiencies, please contact Dr. Tina Beveridge (tbeverid@gmu.edu).

State-Approved Program Requirements

Area

Basic Music Knowledge (18 credits)

  • Music Theory
  • Aural Skills
  • Music History and Literature

Musical Performance (26 credits)

  • Applied Lessons
    (Must be on the principal instrument or voice)
  • Musical Ensembles
    (Must be relevant to the principal instrument or voice and the endorsement area)
  • Keyboarding Skills or Secondary
    All students must demonstrate keyboard proficiency through 2 credit hours of keyboard classes or applied lessons in keyboard. Keyboard principals need a minimum of 2 credit hours of instrumental/vocal techniques classes or applied lessons on a secondary instrument or voice based on endorsement area as follows: Instrumental Band (woodwind, brass, or percussion), Orchestra (string), and Vocal/Choral (voice).
  • Conducting
    Instrumental PK-12 endorsement needs coursework in instrumental conducting and Vocal/Choral PK endorsement needs coursework in choral conducting.
