Application to the Major

Undergraduate students are considered pre-Elementary Education (BPRE) until they meet certain criteria, complete the application to the major, and receive official admission to the program.
Students who enter Mason as freshmen, attend full-time, and follow the recommended academic plan should be ready to apply to the major at the end of the spring semester of their sophomore year. The application will open by early May, and the deadline to apply is August 1. Transfer students must receive admission to the University prior to applying to the major. Because of the August 1 deadline, transfer students applying to the major should attend university orientation by the end of July.
At the time of application to the major, students must have completed or be in the process of completing all eligibility requirements. Requirements must be met by the August 1 deadline in order to be admitted. Prior to starting the online application, students should meet with the Content Area Coursework (Endorsement) Advisor and the Academic Advisor for Elementary Education.
- Be within 9 credits of completing the Mason Core (excluding the synthesis/capstone requirement).
- Complete an official Content Area Coursework (Endorsement) review.
- Achieve and maintain a 2.5 cumulative GPA or higher.
Ideally, students will have completed ELED 242 (or 342) and EDUC 301 with a C or better prior to admission to major. If they have not, they must work with the program’s academic advisor to develop a plan for when they will fit those courses into their schedules.
Students must complete the online Application to the BSED in Elementary Education and submit it along with a PDF file of their Official Content Area Coursework (Endorsement) Review by August 1st prior to beginning their upper-level ELED cohort classes in the fall of their junior year.
Obtaining an Official Content Area Coursework (Endorsement) Review is a multi-step process that begins online and requires an in-person meeting with Mary Slone-O’Neill, the Content Area Advisor. Visit the endorsement webpage for more information.
Decisions will be made on a rolling basis after spring grades have posted, and students will be notified of the decision through their Mason email account.
Once admitted to BSEd status, students will be able to register for their fall classes and will complete the program as a cohort, enrolling in ELED courses full-time each fall and spring for two years. Students who opt to attend part-time will need to work with the program’s academic advisor to develop their own personalized program completion plan.
The major coursework includes field experience hours that must be completed within a PDS school site assigned by the program. Students complete a year-long internship in their final year in addition to upper-level ELED coursework. A new cohort begins each fall; admission to the major in the spring semester is currently not an option.
