This program option in Japanese foreign language education focuses on the rich cultural, linguistic, and experiential assets that diverse learners bring to the classroom. Our teacher education coursework is carefully designed to ensure that you gain the theoretical understandings and pedagogical expertise to teach and serve today’s diverse learners effectively in today’s world language classrooms.
Fieldwork Requirement

Licensure Disclosure
Initial Virginia state licensure concentrations include PK-12 Virginia state licensure to teach one of the following foreign/world languages: Arabic, Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Latin, Korean, and Spanish. Note: These licensure courses require 15 hours of fieldwork for each course. These courses are mainly offered online but may include face-to-face contexts. Content Area Requirements for Virginia Licensure
There may be additional coursework that is required for this licensure pathway. In addition to the required courses listed above, this degree pathway leading to licensure, requires coursework in the following areas:
- Option 1 (all of the below coursework is at the 300 level or higher):
- A language skills course
- A language analysis course
- A literature course in the target language
- A culture and civilization course in the target language
- Additional coursework totaling 30 credits, including the above courses
- Option 2:
- A minimum score of Advanced Low on both the ACTFL WPT and ACTFL OPI assessments
- Two courses in the target language at the 300 level or higher
