Master of Education in Secondary Education, Concentration in History and Social Science
Teaching history and social studies allows you to prepare students to identify, understand, and work to solve the challenges facing our diverse nation in an increasingly interdependent world.
Our program prepares graduates with a deep knowledge of both the subject matter as well as the goals of its instruction and leads to Virginia state licensure in secondary education.

- SEED 522: Foundations of Secondary Education (3 credits)
- SEED 540: Human Development and Learning: Secondary Education (3 credits)
- SEED 567: Teaching Social Studies in the Secondary School (3 credits)
- SEED 667: Advanced Methods of Teaching Social Sciences in the Secondary School (3 credits)
- SEED 677: Action Research Methods in Secondary Education (1 credit)
- SEED 678: Action Research Seminar in Secondary Education (2 credits)
- SEED 795: Internship: Secondary Education Social Studies (6 credits)
Electives
Select 6 credits of 500-level or above education or concentration-related courses, with advisor and/or program coordinator approval.
*Note: SEED offers special topics courses that are currently listed as distinct sections of EDCI 597; students must obtain program approval before registering for any of these courses.
Content Area Requirements for Virginia Licensure
There may be additional coursework that is required for this licensure pathway. In addition to the required courses listed above, this degree pathway leading to licensure, requires coursework in the following areas:
- American History (survey to 1887 or from 1877)
- Virginia History
- World History (survey course)
- 3 History electives
- Civics (US or VA Government/Political Science)
- 5 Political science or government electives
- Cultural Geography
- 2 Geography electives
- Microeconomics
- Macroeconomics
- English Composition
