Teaching Areas

Teaching is an exciting field and rewarding career. Mason offers programs that lead to Virginia teacher licensure in the following areas:

  • Early Childhood Education (PreK-3rd grade)/Early Childhood Special Education (birth-age 5)
    Engage in relevant, research-based course work and rich field experiences that prepare teachers to work with young children and families with diverse backgrounds and experiences. Graduates teach in diverse prekindergarten through third grade and early childhood special education classrooms.
  • Elementary Education (PreK-6th grade)
    Graduate ready to teach in a diverse elementary classroom by working with classroom teachers and university faculty who collaborate to prepare the next generation of educators. Choose from our Virginia-based program or an international program for those intending to move overseas.
  • Fine Arts Education (PreK-12th grade)
    Inspire the next generation through teaching art, music, and theater.
  • Foreign Language and English as a Second Language Education (PreK-12th grade)
    With faculty who focus on teaching culturally and linguistically diverse learners, be prepared to introduce students of all ages and backgrounds to new languages and cultures.
  • Health and Physical Education (PreK-12th grade)
    Make an impact on students of all ages by instilling the value of a healthy lifestyle and sharing a love of movement.
  • Secondary Education (6-12th grade)
    Teach your favorite subject to middle and high school students. Our faculty are not only experts in their fields but also emphasize social justice, advocacy, and teacher leadership, and believe that teachers impact the future.
  • Special Education
    Learn about the world of special education through a current, research-based program, and join the alumni network of one of the largest special education programs in the area.
