Program of Study and Coursework
The PhD in Education program is designed for individuals with a commitment to applying a multidisciplinary view of theory and research. Our students bring a wealth of personal and professional experience to their studies, as well as a commitment to scholarly endeavors.
Program of Study
Students will work with an advisory committee to develop an individualized program of study during their first year in the program.
Study focuses on five areas:
1 - General Culture (3 credits)
- EDUC 800: Ways of Knowing (3 credits)
- EFHP 860: Critical Perspectives in Exercise, Fitness, and Health Promotion (3 credits) - Kinesiology concentration students only
EDUC 800 (or EFHP 860) should be taken in the 1st semester of coursework.
2 - Educational Research (15 credits)
Research core courses are designed to prepare students to evaluate and investigate a range of research approaches and apply qualitative and quantitative data collection and analyses appropriate to research in education. EDRS 810: Problems and Methods in Education Research is taken the first or second semester.
Choose TWO courses from the following options:
- EDRS 826: Qualitative Case Study Methods (3 credits)
- EDRS 828: Item Response Theory (3 credits)
- EDRS 830: Hierarchical Linear Modeling (3 credits) (*)
- EDRS 831: Structural Equation Modeling (3 credits)
- EDRS 833: Participatory Action Research (3 credits)
- EDRS 897: Special Topics in Research Methods (3 credits)
*Students pursuing the Kinesiology Concentration must select these course options.
3 - Primary Specialization (18-24 credits)
Through seminars, courses, internships, and independent studies, students acquire the knowledge and technical skills requisite to a chosen educational specialization. Students may specialize in any of a variety of professional areas.
Coursework may include individualized study.
Coursework may also include internship experiences.

4 - Secondary Specialization (12-18 credits)
All students in the PhD in Education in the School of Education at George Mason University are required to have a secondary emphasis area of scholarship in addition to a primary specialization area of study in education. The purpose of the PhD secondary specialization requirement is to ensure that each student has adequate exposure to the concepts and research methods of a specialty or a coherent interdisciplinary field of study which is relevant to the field of specialization in education.
5 - Doctoral Dissertation (12 credits minimum)
- EDUC 998: Doctoral Dissertation Proposal (3 - 6 credit hours)
- EDUC 999: Doctoral Dissertation Research (6 - 9 credit hours)
